About the Artist
James Postill graduated from the University of British Columbia Okanagan in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts.
Since graduating, James has earned private commissions for portraits and specialized interior work, and public commissions for fresco and latex murals, while continuing to produce works in oils, inspired by the Okanagan landscape..
His landscape works evolved from still lakes to fast moving rivers and streams, culminating in his rain on windshields series which began in 2010.
"As an artist, I am seduced by many factors, visual and otherwise, which contribute to my imagery; the contrast between near space and far space, distinct versus indistinct forms and especially the dysmorphic quality of water on objects. I am endlessly fascinated by the distorted reality seen through a rainy windshield.'
An art instructor since 2001, James has taught art classes with the Monashee Arts Council and the Vernon Community Arts Centre, and facilitated group workshops and private lessons on request.
Accepting a commission from the Monashee Arts Council in 2007 to paint several exterior wall murals, ultimately set him on the path to his true passion of fresco painting. In 2010 while attempting to teach himself the medium, a friend told him about an amazingly artistic Benedictine Monk that he just had to meet.
After the first meeting in 2011with Father Dunstan Massey in Mission, BC, James spent the following two years studying the art of fresco under his long-distance mentorship. Father Dunstan is one of a few known practicing fresco artists in Western Canada and has graciously passed his knowledge along to James.
More recently, James has incorporated airbrush painting into his studio practice, and after purchasing the same type he has been using at work, he is greatly enjoying learning and discovering more about it each time he uses it.
