Painting 'Nocturne'
11"x 14" acrylic and oil on canvas. Sold. This painting is another mixture of airbrush and palette knife, and for James, a celebration of texture and exciting surfaces that he loves to create. It gives off an invitation for the viewer to touch the painting, as the paint is applied in thick measure over the hazy airbrush underpainting. James wanted to keep the colours and values in harmony between the oil and acrylic paints, and at the same time create an undulating surface. This piece, like many of James's rain pieces, was prepared with a grainy undercoating of sand and paint mixed together. The effect becomes noticable when paint is dragged across the rough surface and reinforces the illusion of a windshield distorted by water.
