Painting 'Self Portrait by Roadside'
|18"x 14" acrylic and oil on canvas. The heavily textured canvas, like others he has prepared this way, was also toned dark brown to start with. Very little of the airbrush underpainting remains to be seen because the piece led James to apply oil paint by palette knife much more extensively. On a walk with his dog, he took some photos of the morning sun and the blue-violet shadows it cast across the frost-covered ground and his own shadow. Elongated shadows of people are beginning to take a place in James's imagery, and may be the start of another series.|
